Typing Practice with The Metamorphosis

Note: the well-known English translations of Kafka's novella are not public domain, so the text here is a condensed English retelling written for TypingProo rather than a translation of the original German. Gregor Samsa wakes one morning changed into an insect, and the story follows his family's retreat from him, room by room, until the door closes for good. The sentences are direct and unadorned, closer in feel to Wells or Wilde than to Dickens, so this trains steady pacing rather than heavy punctuation. It is a short, self-contained read — completable in one or two sessions — and a good choice if you want a complete, slightly unsettling story without committing to a long Victorian novel. Progress saves automatically after every passage.

Opening passage

When Gregor Samsa woke one morning from uneasy dreams, he found that he had been changed in his bed into an enormous insect. He lay on his hard, armoured back, and when he lifted his head a little he could see his brown belly divided into stiff arched segments. The bedding could hardly cover it and seemed ready to slide off altogether. His many legs, pitifully thin compared with the rest of him, waved helplessly in the air before his eyes.
