Type Toss: The Duck Typing Game Where Every Word Makes a Splash

Welcome to Type Toss, a colorful fairground duck typing game you can play free online right in your web browser! Inspired by classic carnival dunk tanks and toss booths, Type Toss places toy ducks and friendly pandas on three mechanical conveyor belts. Each animal carries a word card. When you type the letters of a card, your ball launcher locks onto the target and tosses a bouncy beach ball that splashes the animal into the pool below.

Unlike traditional typing tests that feel like office paperwork, Type Toss turns touch-typing practice into an engaging arcade experience. There are no downloads, no account registrations, and no passwords to memorize. Just pick a difficulty mode, hit start, and watch your typing speed and finger dexterity climb with every successful splash.

How to play Type Toss

  1. Select a difficulty mode. Choose between Splash (relaxed 90-second run for kids), Classic (the 75-second fair standard), or Blitz (a frantic 60-second speed challenge).
  2. Type the letters on any visible card. Look at the conveyor belts. As soon as you type the first letter of a word, the launcher swivels into position and highlights matching letters in green.
  3. Use Backspace to switch targets. If two animals have words starting with the same letter, or if your target slides out of view, press Backspace to clear your prefix and retarget another animal.
  4. Clear waves for bonus time. Each wave contains 9 animals (3 per belt). Splash all nine animals to complete the wave and earn +4 bonus seconds plus extra score multiplier points!

Splash, Classic and Blitz modes

Whether you are a kindergarten student just learning home-row letters or an adult practicing for competitive speed, Type Toss has a difficulty setting tuned for your pace:

Mode Time Belt Speed Description
Splash 90s 0.8x 90 seconds · gentle rows · soft typo penalty
Classic 75s 1x 75 seconds · full-speed rows · standard penalty
Blitz 60s 1.25x 60 seconds · fast rows · typos hurt twice

Points, combos and grades

Every successful toss scores points based on the word length and your active combo streak:

  • Combo multiplier: Consecutive correct hits build your streak multiplier from 1x up to 3x (+0.5x every 4 consecutive hits).
  • Wave clear bonus: Clearing all 9 animals awards a generous wave bonus, with an extra reward if completed with zero typos.
  • Fairground Ranks: At the end of your run, your score and accuracy award a carnival rank: Ringmaster (S) for 60+ WPM with 96%+ accuracy, Splash Star (A) for 45+ WPM, Fairground Regular (B) for 30+ WPM, Booth Apprentice (C) for 18+ WPM, and First Night at the Fair (D) for beginners.

Tips for kids and beginners

  • Look ahead at the belts. Notice which direction the conveyor belts are rolling. Words moving left-to-right give you plenty of runway before they reach the curtain edge.
  • Prioritize accuracy over speed. A typo resets your combo multiplier back to 1x and deducts points. Typing smoothly and steadily yields far higher scores than frantic button mashing.
  • Target short words first. When a wave begins, typing quick 3-letter words instantly clears visual clutter and builds your combo multiplier before tackling longer 6-to-8 letter words.

For teachers and classrooms

Type Toss was designed specifically to be safe, enjoyable, and distraction-free in school computer labs and homes. Fairground calliope music is disabled by default to prevent unexpected noise in classrooms, while gentle sound effects can be toggled with a single click. There are no logins, no email collections, and all personal best scores remain strictly on the local computer.

Frequently Asked Questions — Type Toss

What is Type Toss?

Type Toss is a free duck typing game on TypingProo. Rubber ducks and pandas ride three moving conveyor belts inside a classic fairground booth, each holding a word card. Type the word under any animal to toss a beach ball from the launcher and splash that animal into the water. Clear all nine animals to complete the wave and earn bonus seconds.

How do I play Type Toss?

Start typing the letters of any word you see riding the conveyor belts. The launcher automatically aims at the matching card and tracks your progress in green. Once you complete the entire word, the launcher tosses a beach ball and knocks the animal into the pool. If two words begin with the same letter, you can press Backspace at any time to switch your target.

Is Type Toss free, with no signup?

Yes. Type Toss is 100% free to play directly in your web browser. There is no account registration, no login, and no app download required. Your high scores and preferences are saved locally on your device in your browser's local storage.

Which mode is best for kids?

The Splash mode is best for kids, beginners, and early learners. It provides a relaxed 90-second round, slower conveyor belt speeds, and a gentle typo penalty so young typists can focus on finding keys accurately without feeling rushed.

How is WPM worked out?

Your WPM is measured as active typing speed: correct letters plus one bonus character per completed word (for the implied space), divided by 5, per minute of time when words were actively available to type. Time spent between waves or waiting for cards does not penalize your WPM.

Does it work on Chromebooks and iPads?

Yes. Type Toss runs in any modern browser on Chromebooks, Windows, Macs, iPads, and mobile tablets. A physical keyboard provides the best experience. On touchscreens, tapping the booth opens your device's on-screen keyboard.

Is this the Type Toss game from Typing.com?

No. Type Toss on TypingProo is an independent fairground game featuring rubber ducks, pandas, and beach balls. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to Typing.com or Teaching.com.

Can I play without sound?

Yes. Calliope fairground music is muted by default so classrooms remain quiet. You can toggle sound effects and background music independently using the speaker and note icons on the dashboard.
