Typing Practice with Aesop's Fables

Aesop's Fables is the shortest, simplest book in the library, and that is exactly the point. Each fable is a self-contained story a few sentences long, ending in its own stated moral — "Slow and steady wins the race", "It is easy to despise what you cannot get" — so you can complete a whole story, and feel a finish, in a couple of minutes. That makes it the easiest entry point for kids or absolute beginners who need quick wins rather than a multi-week commitment. The vocabulary is plain and the sentence structure simple, with none of the long Victorian clauses found elsewhere in the library. Nine fables are included here, and a session of even two or three is enough to complete a full arc. A good warm-up before a timed speed test, or a first book for a typist who has never finished one before.

Opening passage

A Hare was one day making fun of a Tortoise for being so slow upon his feet. Wait a bit, said the Tortoise; I will run a race with you, and I will wager that I win. Oh, well, replied the Hare, who was much amused at the idea, let us try and see. When the time came both started off together, but the Hare was soon so far ahead that he lay down and fell fast asleep. Meanwhile the Tortoise kept plodding on, and in time reached the goal. Slow and steady wins the race.
